5 Things You Should Consider Before Embarking on a Road Trip

road trip safety tips

Nothing’s better than going on a road trip with family or friends. Whether you are traveling near or far, you should always make sure to prepare before you leave in case of an emergency. Don’t let car trouble or faulty navigation systems put a damper on your road trip fun. Follow these tips below to get you and your passengers there safely!

Car maintenance

Arguably the most important part of your pre-road trip preparations should be making sure your vehicle is up for the journey. Take your car to a mechanic so they can ensure that your vehicle and all its parts are safe to drive long distances and will get you there in one piece. It’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with your car's indicator lights. Make sure to have your manual in the car at all times so that you can read about an indicator light if one lights up during your journey.

Roadside coverage

If something unfortunate were to happen to your vehicle on your road trip, you'd want access to roadside assistance. You won't wish you had it until you need it rings true here! Imagine being stranded on the highway without a backup plan. Roadside coverage can be purchased through your insurance provider or auto clubs like AAA.

Map out your route

As convenient as cell phone navigation can be, it’s not smart to solely rely on smartphones for your directions. You never know when you might lose service – especially in rural or mountain areas – and this form of navigation can rack up a hefty cell phone bill if you’re not on wifi. Go online before your trip and print out physical copies of your directions!

In-car entertainment

When traveling with little ones (and even teens), in-car entertainment is essential for a calm and quiet road trip. Download movies to a tablet or purchase new games and books before your journey. These new toys will keep your kids' interests and help you concentrate on the road. Snacks are also a great way to keep everyone happy with full bellies during a long journey.

Trusty neighbors

Even if you live in the safest of neighborhoods, let a trustworthy neighbor know that you will be out of town. It’s a good idea to have another set of eyes on your house when it's vacant. Make sure to leave contact information with them in case something happens to your home. Plus, you’ll rest easy knowing a watchful eye is on your home while you’re away!

Have questions about an upcoming road trip or your Orlando car insurance policy? Ask us your questions on social! If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask! At Harrell Agency, we're proud to be your go-to insurance agent in Central Florida.
